Why NuiKeALOHA Fridays?

The past 12 months have been a period of great change for us here in Hawai’i.  Many have pivoted, some for better, some for worse.  We have felt the true impacts and imminent threats to our food security and supply chains. 

In traditional times our kūpuna held mea ‘ai in the highest levels of respect and sanctity, and for the simple reason, without sustenance on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, we would undoubtedly perish. There is no moment in recent history that we can recall where this wasn't more of a reality for us.

Through these many hard learned lessons, it is of great importance to reach out to recognize our true food heros and those who were often overlooked as essential.

As we continue applaud the great efforts of our front line medical, emergency response and public safety work force, our teachers and restaurant workers, we offer a subscription model meal service in honor and support of our farmers, fishers, and culture keepers. 

As we begin to approach what could hopefully be the light at the end of the tunnel, we must persevere and remain diligent to what this pandemic has made so clear, it is time for us to shift our way of thinking, our way of behaving, our way of caring for the land which cares for us.

While we begin to venture out of our quarantined homes and allow visitors to return to our islands, we take this opportunity to support and uplift those who have made staunch commitments to provide what we need most. E ola mau, our lives shall continue on. We shall mourn those we have lost, hold close those who have been fortunate to proceed unscathed. When we can, we should stop to celebrate.
